There are at least 13,000 people in Peterborough without a family doctor.

Peterborough would be far more attractive for new physicians, said Dr. Jaclyn Vanek – plus the city would be able to retain some doctors already practicing here – if it had a specialized community health centre for marginalized patients who lack a family doctor.
The Community Healthcare Centre (CHC) has existed for 20 years in cities and municipalities across Ontario, though not in Peterborough. Meanwhile there are at least 13,000 people in Peterborough without a family doctor – 6,000 of whom are marginalized and could be rostered at a CHC.
Lots of doctors want to work in such a centre, said Vanek at a round-table discussion held Thursday.
